 Cattler Team

October 22, 2026

 **TL;DR**

Every feedlot manager knows the real cost of a bad record: a treatment nobody wrote down, a load shipped without a clean closeout, a dart that never made it onto the invoice. Margins in the cattle business are thin, and the information that protects them is usually scattered across notebooks, spreadsheets and the memory of whoever was on the pen that morning.

We asked six cattle feeders and ranchers in Tennessee, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana to tell us, in their own words, what changed after they moved to Cattler's feedlot management software. They run very different operations: a 7,000-head commercial feedlot, a custom feeding yard, a beef-on-dairy program, and a rancher feeding cattle at several locations with hired hands. Yet their stories point to the same handful of lessons about what good cattle management software should do. Here is what they told us, and what it means if you are weighing a switch yourself.

## 1. Speed at the chute and the bunk is where software pays for itself

The first thing most operators noticed was time saved on daily chores. Cody, who moved his beef-on-dairy operation to Cattler from previous systems, put it simply: "This system is so much more efficient, so much faster."

The gains come from removing manual steps in the jobs your crew repeats hundreds of times a week:

- **Hardware integration.** Cattler connects with scales, wands and EID tag readers, so weights and IDs flow straight into the record. "It's gonna make my life so much simpler," Cody said.
- **Faster processing.** Kyle's team in Beatrice uses an EID sled reader at the chute. Even a few seconds saved per head of manual entry adds up across a full pen.
- **Pen riding records.** Logging a treatment right after you doctor a calf is "so fast, so easy there's no reason not to do it." Records that are easy to enter actually get entered.
- **Bunk calls.** When you make the call, Cattler automatically adds the feed and bumps the ration up for the day's feeding.
- **Easy exports.** Data can be sent out in CSV form for your nutritionist, accountant or buyer.

**Takeaway for prospects:** time your current chute and bunk routines before you evaluate any software. Seconds per head and minutes per pen are the clearest return you will measure.

## 2. Individual animal health: pinpoint, treat, and track

Kyle's favorite feature is [individual animal health](http://www.cattler.farm/en/animal-health). "We're able to pinpoint cattle and keep track of them," he explained. Levi, who custom feeds in Albin, Wyoming, called health planning "a huge benefit."

The practical value is in protocols:

- Set **different health protocols for different groups of cattle** as they come in, so every arrival is processed the same way.
- Plan treatments ahead instead of reacting pen by pen. In Levi's words, "it really speeds up that whole process."
- Keep a treatment history on every animal, which supports pull decisions, withdrawal tracking and buyer conversations.

## 3. True cost of gain: account for every expense

The most detailed lesson came from Kyle in Nebraska. His team uses Cattler to input all of their expenses, and builds costs directly into protocols:

- **Labor** for moving cattle is included in the protocol.
- **Poles and treats** are accounted for.
- **Darts** are built in, so "if we lose darts, those costs are accounted for."

The goal, he said, is to be "all inclusive in all of our accounting, and not letting anything get through the fingers." The result is "an accurate representation of all of our costs." His team is now working on scanning at shipping so closeouts capture every number on the load.

**Takeaway for prospects:** if your closeouts do not include labor and small consumables, your cost of gain is understated. Ask any vendor to show you how a protocol carries its own costs.

## 4. One platform from inventory to invoice

For custom feeders, billing accuracy is the business. Levi singled out "the billing and invoicing side of things" and "how seamlessly it keeps track of our inventory." Lance, in Riverton, Wyoming, described Cattler as a platform that helps "streamline the feedlot processes, everything from managing inventory to billing, protocols for feeding." His summary: it "really helps simplify the whole operation."

When inventory, feeding, health and billing live in one system, you stop reconciling between spreadsheets. Yardage, feed and treatment charges come from the same records the crew entered in the field.

## 5. Built for crews, multiple locations and any device

Tucker runs cattle in Denton, Montana, with hired hands working in separate locations, feeding different pens. Keeping everyone on the same page is the hard part. "I could never ask for a better program to work with," he said.

Two details matter for operations like his:

- **Multi-location management.** Everyone records into one shared picture of every pen.
- **Device flexibility.** Cattler works across both Apple and Android, so your crew can use the phones and tablets they already carry.

Having compared other programs on the market, Tucker said he doesn't feel another one could satisfy his operation's needs the same way.

## 6. A software partner that listens and shows up

Software is only as good as the team behind it. Jon runs a feedlot of about 7,000 head in Hooper, Nebraska. He valued how Cattler developed its feedback management system and keeps improving: "When we've requested changes, they haven't been instant, but they've listened to us, and they've gone back to the drawing board and continued to make improvements."

Onboarding matters too. When Cody switched, two Cattler representatives flew out and stayed on-site for two days, until his team was confident with the program.

**Takeaway for prospects:** ask every vendor two questions. How will you train my crew on-site? And what happened the last time a customer asked for a change?

## Conclusion: what these ranchers would tell you

Six operations, four states, and very different business models, but the same conclusions:

- **Speed drives adoption.** Integration with scales, EID readers, and [micro machines](https://www.cattler.farm/en/comco-integration/) plus fast pen-riding and bunk-call entry, means records get made.
- **Health is managed by protocol.** [Group-specific protocols and individual animal tracking](http://www.cattler.farm/en/animal-health) take the guesswork out of processing and treatment.
- **Costs are complete.** Labor, darts, poles and treats built into protocols give you a true cost of gain and cleaner closeouts.
- **One system runs the yard.** Inventory, feeding, health and billing in one platform, which matters most for custom feeders.
- **It fits your crew.** Multiple languages and roles. Apple or Android.
- **The team stands behind it.** On-site onboarding and a company that keeps improving based on rancher feedback.

As Cody put it: "I'd highly recommend it to anybody that does this for a living."
